“this photo is my proof”
I've carried those words from a Duane Michals photograph with me since I was a young photographer. They remind me that photographs don't just preserve appearances—they bear witness to moments that would otherwise disappear. They are proof that something happened, that people met, that lives briefly intersected.
Vecino is my proof. For more than twenty years, East Austin has been the neighborhood I've called home. These portraits and conversations honor the friends, neighbors, and familiar faces who have shaped my understanding of this place through shared sidewalks, front porches, corner stores, and everyday encounters. As the neighborhood continues to change, this work becomes a living record of the people and stories that define its spirit.
These photographs are my proof that something wonderful happened here.
Look. See for yourself.
